2018 marks 50 years since Johnny Cash played a historic concert for the prisoners at California’s Folsom State Prison. Looking back, Cash is considered one of the most popular Country Music stars of all time, but during the late-1960s his reputation had begun to suffer from his struggle with drugs and alcohol. As he regained control over his addictions and sought to rejuvenate his career, he convinced Columbia Records to make a live album from one of his prison concerts. The immediate success of Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison soon led to another prison show and live album, Johnny Cash At San Quentin, won him multiple Grammy Awards, and launched an enormously successful phase in his life, solidifying his position as a timeless icon of music. Jim was the only official photographer at both concerts.

To commemorate this 50th anniversary the Jim Marshall estate together with @reelartpress revisited the Johnny Cash archive of images and released a selection of photographs from both the Folsom and San Quentin Prison events in the new book “Johnny Cash at Folsom and San Quentin”. The book includes photographs of Cash onstage and touring the prison grounds, along with several from the legendary soundcheck at San Quentin when Cash so famously "flipped the bird" for Marshall.
Some of these images and a selection of the estate editions released in 2011 will be featured in the SFAE exhibition, along with several extremely rare and highly sought-after signed photographs from Jim Marshall's personal archive of prints.

PLEASE NOTE: Collectors who purchase any Jim Marshall photograph during the exhibition will receive a complimentary copy of the new book "Johnny Cash at Folsom & San Quentin Photographs by Jim Marshall" (Reel Art Press), coming out later this summer.
