Jim Marshall (1936–2010) is celebrated worldwide for his rock-'n'-roll photographs. So far undiscovered was his incredible archive of jazz images. Marshall's earliest music photos were recorded in jazz clubs he loved and frequented. During the 1960s, he photographed the jazz festivals of Newport and Monterey. These were the first popular music festivals, they took place in one of the most important development phases of jazz.

With his inimitable eye, Marshall captured the freedom, excitement, and intimacy of these joyful celebrations. With ease, Marshall not only immortalizes the fascination of musicians on stage and in private moments, but especially the unique atmosphere of light-heartedness and openness in the audience—old and young, black and white.

These extraordinary images show Jim Marshall's unique talent and lifelong quest for the perfect snapshot.

After exhibitions in London, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston, 'Jim Marshall: Jazz Festival' can now be seen in at Stadthalle Gütersloh.

The photography in the exhibition are from the illustrated book "Jim Marshall: Jazz Festival," published by Reel Art Press, and available as limited, signed fine-art prints at the Lightpower Collection. Proceeds from the sale of these prints will benefit industry foundations.

The exhibition is presented by the Lightpower Collection, Bertelsmann, and the Kultur Räume Gütersloh.
